What Is an ANPR Camera?

An ANPR camera is positioned to capture a vehicle registration plate clearly as the vehicle passes a defined point. The image is processed by recognition software, which identifies the registration characters and converts them into data that can be searched, recorded or compared with configured rules.

This is different from simply having general CCTV footage of a car park. A conventional security camera may show that a vehicle was present, but the registration plate may not be clear enough to read consistently. A dedicated ANPR camera system is designed to capture number plates at key approach points.

How Does ANPR Work?

A typical automatic number plate recognition process follows these stages:

1.  A vehicle approaches an entrance, exit, lane or other defined capture point.

2.  The ANPR camera records an image of the number plate at the required moment.

3.  Recognition software identifies the plate area and reads the registration characters.

4.  The registration is converted into searchable data and associated with information such as a date,time, camera or direction of travel.

5.  Where configured, the registration may be compared with an authorised, unauthorised or visitor list.

6.  The system records the event or triggers an agreed action, such as presenting information to an operator or communicating with an access-control device.

Not every ANPR system needs to control a gate or compare vehicles against a list. Some are designed primarily to create a vehicle movement record, while others form part of a controlled-access process. The purpose should be defined before the system is designed.

ANPR should not be treated as a standalone answer to every vehicle-security issue. Physical layout, signage, gate safety, visitor procedures, delivery management and general CCTV coverage may all be necessary to create an effective process.

A number plate is more useful when it can be viewed in context. Linking ANPR with commercial CCTV systems provides broader footage of the vehicle, occupants and surrounding activity. An operator investigating an event may be able to use the registration record to locate the relevant time and camera view more efficiently.

A site survey is essential because the vehicle route determines the capture opportunity.
