Key Fob

Entry Systems

Key fob entry systems provide businesses with a convenient way to control who can enter their premises without relying on traditional keys.

Each authorised user can be issued with an individual electronic fob that is recognised by the access-control system. Permissions can then be managed centrally so that access is provided only to the doors, areas and times appropriate to that user.

We design, install and maintain commercial key fob access-control systems throughout Birmingham and the West Midlands.

How Does a Key Fob Entry System Work?

A key fob contains an electronic credential that is recognised when presented to a compatible access-control reader. The system checks the credential against the permissions assigned to that user. If access is permitted, the system signals the associated locking equipment to release the door. If access is not permitted, the door remains controlled and the event may be recorded by the management system.

A commercial fob access system can include:

  • Proximity readers

  • Electronic key fobs

  • Door controllers

  • Electronic locks

  • Door-position monitoring

  • Exit devices

  • Management software

  • User and access-event records

The exact configuration depends on the premises and selected access-control platform.

Why Use Key Fobs Instead of Traditional Keys?

Traditional keys provide limited control once they have been issued. If a key is lost, copied or not returned, organisations may need to consider replacing the affected lock and redistributing keys. With an electronic key fob system, an individual credential can usually be disabled without changing the lock or affecting other authorised users.

This can make it easier to manage:

  • Staff joining or leaving the organisation

  • Lost credentials

  • Contractors

  • Temporary users

  • Different departments

  • Restricted areas: permissions can be configured so that authorised users only have access to the parts of the premises required for their role.

  • Out-of-hours access - access permissions can be configured around specific days and times, helping organisations control who can enter a building or restricted area outside normal operating hours. For example, authorised employees, cleaners, maintenance teams or contractors can be given access only during agreed periods, rather than always having unrestricted access.

What Happens if a Key Fob Is Lost?

One of the main operational advantages of electronic access control is the ability to manage individual credentials. If a key fob is reported lost, stolen or not returned, its access can be removed from the system so that the credential can no longer be used to enter authorised areas.

A replacement credential can then be issued to the user without necessarily replacing the associated door lock, reissuing credentials to other users or making wider changes to the access control system. This can make managing lost credentials quicker and less disruptive than dealing with a missing traditional key, particularly across larger sites or buildings with multiple controlled access points.

Clear internal processes are still important. Lost or stolen credentials should be reported as soon as possible so they can be identified and disabled promptly, helping to reduce the risk of unauthorised access.
